Honeywell Smart Thermostat RTH9580WF Review
The Honeywell Smart Thermostat RTH9580WF provides an excellent entry point for customers that are upgrading their current thermostat or installing their first one. A smart device is not required to operate this system, but having one or access to a computer gives you access to a number of additional features. For the price, this thermostat offers nearly all the same features as the Nest Thermostat, for a 1/3 less of the price.
Benefits of the Honeywell Smart Thermostat RTH9580WF
All necessary info on one screen
From the home screen, you’re able to see the outside temperature, humidity, date, time, and more without having to navigate through any menus. This makes moving through the house in the morning a breeze to get the info you need to prepare for your day.
Mobile app control and monitoring
If you have a computer, tablet, or smartphone, which is not required, you can download the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort App. This app allows you to operate the thermostat from any of these internet connected devices wherever you are in the world to monitor and manage the temperature and energy usage. This app is available for both iOS and Android operating systems.
It’s great knowing that you can warm the house up in winter before you get home from work, but what makes it even better is the monitoring aspect. If you’re a frequent traveler, you know how hectic your schedule can be. One day you’re here and another day you’re there, with no telling what will happen next week. The app not only gives you control over your system, but it provides protection too.
Combine this system with Stringify or IFTTT and you can ensure your home is always protected even when you’re away. Say for example, your heater goes out and it’s a toasty 3 degrees above 0 outside. If you’re not home to have it fixed, pipes can freeze quickly causing a lot of damage. With this system and Stringify or IFTTT, you can set up alerts that will notify you when a change has been made in the system.

Not traveler? Well everyone has had those nights where it’s either freezing or feeling like a sauna. No more walking all the way down stairs to change the temperature!
For most people, this install will likely take less than 30 minutes to do. All that is required is disconnecting the old thermostat and attaching the new one with the appropriate wire connections. Even if some minor rewiring has to be done, and I mean very minor, this will take an hour tops. No need to call the electrician or HVAC.
Have Amazon Alexa? Fantastic, this thermostat is compatible and can be controlled via voice through an Alexa device!
Unlike many other smart thermostats, such as Nest, Ecobee, Sensi, etc. Honeywell provides you the option of adjusting the background color. While this is a very subjective feature, it is a nice touch that can help your thermostat blend in with your own décor.
Smart phone not required
In fact, not a single smart device or computer is required to use this thermostat! However, a smart device or computer does provide you with several additional features. Regardless, this makes this thermostat a great ‘entry’ level model for someone who just wants to get their feet wet with smart products. I say ‘entry’ very loosely here, because it does not function like an entry level product, rather it is ideal and user friendly for the entry level consumer.
Drawbacks of the Honeywell Smart Thermostat RTH9580WF
No learning feature
If you’re looking for a thermostat that has a ‘learning’ feature, then check out the Nest 3rd Generation Thermostat. Unfortunately this Honeywell model cannot learn your own personal preferences, but it can be scheduled for certain times. The difference is with a ‘learning’ mode, it teaches and programs itself, but with a scheduling feature, like this one has, you set the program and schedule.
Requires a ‘C’ Wire
This is where compatibility can become grey. This thermostat requires a ‘C’ wire that is hardwired to the furnace so it can be powered. If you do not have a ‘C’ wire, you can install it yourself or have your HVAC company do it for about $100. To determine whether or not you have a ‘C’ wire, see the section below on compatibility.
Technical Details and Compatibility
This thermostat is compatible with a 2-stage system, although a 2-stage system is not required. An issue that most people will run into is whether or not they have a ‘C’ wire, which is required to run the system. Follow the steps below to see if your system is compatible.
- Are there markings on your thermostat that denote it is 110v or higher?
- If Yes, move onto the next question
- Are there thick wires that are connected with wire nuts?
- If Yes, your system is not compatible
- If No, move onto the next question
- Is there a wire connected to a terminal labeled ‘C’?
- If Yes, your system is compatible.
- Is there an extra wire that is not connected to any terminal on the thermostat wall plate or a wire connected to a terminal labeled ‘G’? If yes to either, you may be able to install this thermostat with your system.
If you fall into the category of ‘Maybe’, you may contact Honeywell directly and they will provide you assistance.
Great features and great value from a reputable company, that’s what you’re getting with this smart thermostat. At a price that is about $100 less than similar smart wifi-connected thermostats, this product is a perfect starter or transition from a traditional thermostat into the 21st century.
