With all the big name companies jumping on the home automation bandwagon and producing the same line of products with many of the same features, it’s nice to see a
company like Lifi Labs Inc. who has created something that isn’t like the rest, but performs just as efficiently with less hassle.
In addition to the sweet promotion video I love; the bulb itself is a phenomenal piece of technology.
LIFX pioneered the smart light in 2012 with the first Wi-Fi enabled, multi-colored LED that’s controllable via a smart device. Designed to last over 22 years, LIFX offers the brightest, most flexible smart light for your home or office. Visit lifx.com today.
Benefits of the LIFX Smart LED light bulb
Sweet modern design
Similar to that of the Phillips Hue line, the LIFX bulb has the modern shape and design that gives off a contemporary look. Instead of the rounded top and slimmer base, it has a cylindrical design that is flat on top and breaks down cleanly to the base of the bulb.
Available in two colors
Unlike the other smart bulbs, these are available in two colors to suit the needs and look of your home. They come in a rich, dark black, and a clean, pure white that will fit any home’s style.
The LIFX software allows you to receive visual notifications via a flashing color when you setup a specific alert. For example if you have your phone set down somewhere and receive a text, the LIFX bulb can flash green to alert you of a received text. Other notifications include if the weather is about to change, or if you have your bulbs connected to your Nest Smoke Alarm, they can flash red to alert you of an emergency. This is great for those with hearing impairments, which leads us into the next benefit.
Unlike any other bulb (I’m aware of), the LIFX bulb can be integrated with the Nest Thermostat, Nest Smoke Alarm, and Nest CO alarm. As mentioned before, those with hearing impairments will be able to see an emergency and know to get out of a situation before it becomes dangerous. The bulbs can be set to flash red or any other color in case of an emergency.
Hands Free Activation
The hands free activation turns the bulbs on automatically when you come within a certain distance of them. Think about the next time you’re carrying a bunch of groceries in the house and the lights are off. Once you pull in the driveway, the lights sense you’re home and come on automatically. No more tripping over toys, banging your shins into coffee tables, or walking through the darkness.
With the LIFX bulb, there is not a hub, bridge, or any other sort of special gadget required to connect them. Everything is built into the bulb and the app. All you need is a smart device and a wifi connection to get started. This makes the LIFX bulb a great option for those with little technical know-how or those who don’t want to mess with the hassle of more components.
I’m sure you’ve seen those expensive alarm clocks that are supposed to simulate the sunrise and help you sleep better right? The LIFX bulb can do just the same as these $100 or $150 alarm clocks. With a set schedule, the bulbs can naturally increase in intensity to create a sunrise look right in your bedroom. This allows your body to naturally adjust to ‘the sun’ and wake up in a less-groggy state.
Similar to the Philips Hue, these bulbs can be connected to the popular app If This Then That, where you can program the lights to perform a certain function when ‘x’ event happens. Say your favorite sports team scores a point; you can program your bulbs to flash your team’s colors when a point is scored.
Visualization of Music
Having a party sometime soon? These bulbs can be programmed to ‘dance’ with the music and create a lively atmosphere for any occasion.
Drawbacks of the LIFX Smart LED light bulb
While the LIFX bulb does an excellent job of differentiating itself from the competition in terms of quality, it also does a great job in terms of price. The bulb is significantly greater in cost than any other smart LED bulb on the market. You can see the current price and availability of the bulb here.
The bulb is actually quite large, so large in fact, it may not fit in certain light fixtures. It is larger than most standard LED bulbs, so it is recommended to take measurements before purchase. The bulb measures 65mm wide and 135mm tall with the A21 Edison Screw (standard).
It gets HOT!
This is common with many LED bulbs, but I put it as a drawback here because of both the size and the heat. Since they have a larger surface area, this can become a larger issue. After using these bulbs for several hours, they will become hot to the touch and can burn. Keep it away from children or areas where something could catch.
- Brightness: 1017 Lumens (75W Equivalent)

- Life: 22.8 years
- Based on 3 hours of usage per day
- Light Appearance: 2500-9000k
- Energy Used: 17 watts
Great bulb, great design, easy setup, but with a hefty price. If you’re looking for something that really is plug and play and you don’t want to mess with a bridge or hub, this is your bulb. Otherwise, if you don’t mind setting up a few other components you may want to go with the Philips Hue for color, or the GE Smart LED Bulb for regular light. It should be noted that although it’s more expensive than the Philips Hue per bulb, the LIFX bulbs are rated to last nearly twice as long.
