Smart Thermostats

The Best Smart Thermostats

What better way to save on your monthly bills and live more comfortably than to invest in a smart thermostat! Today’s smart thermostats provide a new dimension in home automation that is affordable as it is useful. Most websites and companies will differentiate between wifi-enabled, programmable, and non-programmable thermostats. However, for the sake of this article we will include both wifi-enabled and programmable thermostats, since the line between the two is somewhat grey.

The mainly difference between programmable and non-programmable thermostats is the ability to set a schedule of when it should turn on or turn off. Programmable thermostats give you this option, while non-programmable thermostats must be manually adjusted when you want the temperature to be changed.

Installing any of these thermostats is fairly simple and once setup, it’s a breeze controlling your heating and air conditioning either from your smart device, computer, or the unit itself. Before purchasing any thermostat you should check to see if you have the required equipment. Some smart thermostats on the market today require a hub or bridge to connect to your wireless network. For the four thermostats below, none of them require a hub or bridge to connect. Each should be able to connect to your wireless network without any additional hardware.

Another common issue DIYers run into is whether or not their new smart thermostat is compatible with their current system. Some of the companies who produce smart thermostats have made it easy to fix this problem. Below are a list of the companies with a link to their instructions.

Honeywell – http://wifithermostat.com/

Sensi – https://sensicomfort.com/compatibility/

Ecobee – https://www.ecobee.com/compatibility/

In addition to compatibility issues some installs may require an additional wall plate that installs behind the thermostat. This is mainly for cosmetics since your old thermostat may leave some holes or additional wiring you do not want sticking out.
