Stringify – A New Wave of Home Automation

What is Stringify? Stringify Explained

What is Stringify? No, it’s not Spotify even if it sounds like it. Stringify is an app you can download onto your smartphone for free that will automate your smart home and office devices.

How does it work? When you connect your smart devices to Stringify you can then control them from the app. Things like turning the lights on and off, opening and closing the garage door, setting the thermostat, etc. Some of the compatible services, include Amazon Alexa, Ecobee, Nest, Garageio, and many more.

Once you connect your devices you can begin creating flows. Flows are the whole idea behind Stringify. A flow is a set of actions that takes place under certain circumstances such as time or location. Put simply, Stringify allows you to create a string of events to occur simultaneously. Every flow needs a “trigger” and an “action”. Triggers are the how, when and where. There are three basic types of flows you can have:

  • Instant Response. You can set a flow on a “button” (which basically looks like a power button) and then if you click the button the flow will perform instantly. This is nice for perhaps a goodnight flow. When you are ready for bed, you can press this flow and it may turn out your lights and whatever else you may want before bed.
  • Time. Your trigger can be the time of day. You can set the flow to occur at a specific time of day, or you can just have it occur more generally “in the morning” or “in the evening”. For example, you can set a flow to occur at 7AM when you wake up. Then every morning at 7 sharp Alexa can tell you the weather report for the day and then tell you the top stories on the news while the app also turns on your lights and sets the thermostat. If you don’t have Alexa, you can always get the same information in a notification or email.
  • Location. You can turn on the location services and have a flow set to perform tasks when you reach a certain place. For example, when you’re coming home from work you can have your location tracked so that when you pull into the neighborhood your garage door opens, lights turn on, etc.

Those are the different types of flows you can have. However, there is a way you can take your flows to the next level and that’s by adding “only if” conditions. For example, when the sun rises and only if I am home, then get me a weather report. If you have trouble thinking of ideas for flows, no worries. It’s probably already been made! The app has plenty of pre-made flows for you to explore and choose from. Of course, you can always modify it if you need to.The app can even perform tasks such as sending emails and more, see the image below!

Now that you know what it is, it’s pretty easy to set up. As I said before, the app is free to download. Then all you need is to create an account by giving your name, email, and creating a password. You’ll receive an email to confirm your account and then you’re good to go! It’ll walk you through step by step to help you set up your first flow and correctly program all the settings. It’s very straightforward! The only downfall is whether or not the app can support your smart products, but it does have many options available.

With your Stringify app you can now change the way you automate your home and office. This app will allow you to combine all automation for home and office in one place. Even if you don’t have very many smart products, this app can be useful for everyday tasks such as receiving an alert about the traffic for your commute or for the weather that day. It’s definitely a part of the next step towards complete home automation.
